General Description

Built in Taiwan by the Transpacific Marine Company Ltd (owned and operated by two US owners) the Transpac 49 was built for ocean cruising.  Offering sturdy, hand-laid solid fiberglass hull construction with an excellent layout both above and below deck.  On deck the center cockpit with custom hard top and enclosure offers a secure helm.  Wide decks and solid stainless steel handrails provide added safety and comfort.  Her teak decks are in excellent condition and were replaced durring a 2002-03 refit.

The interior offers a huge main salon, large galley, spacious master cabin aft with large private head, two guest cabins forward, forward head/shower all heated and cooled by three marine reverse cycle air conditioning units.

Engine access is excellent and includes a workroom adjacent to the engine room.

Main Salon


As you would expect the main salon offers a spacious but very practical layout well suited to the cruiser.  Entering the main salon the galley is directly to port of the companionway stairs and is designed for use at anchor or at sea. Just forward of the galley is a large U-shaped dinette with a dining table that can be lowered to form an additional double berth.  Opposite to starboard there is a single settee which is large enough to use as a single berth.  Main features include:

  • 3 large forward facing portlights and 2 large portlights to port and starboard offering ample light and creating a very open feel to the main salon
  • 2 overhead hatches
  • Tons of storage outboard of settees, both port and starboard

Rigging and Sails

SOFIRA is cutter ketch rigged with Harken roller furling headsail gear and Harken aft-of-mast roller furling gear on both main and mizzen masts.  Equipment includes:

Complete refit 2002/03 including:

  • Original teak deak removed, top fiberglass layer removed, plywood core removed and replaced with European marine ply cut into sections and secured with cabosil. Entire deck coverd with 3 layers fiberglass mat and then 3 layers woven roving followed by gelcoat and 5/8" teak decking.  Where all deck fittings have penetrations the holes were drilled oversized and filled with fiberglass prior to being drilled to accept fittings.  Around chainplates special blocks were fabricated to allow for removal for the re-caulking of the chainplates.
